Julia C Liu is a Providence, Rhode Island based artist, director, and Emmy nominated cinematographer seeking to promote diversity in front of and behind the lens. Her passion for visual storytelling started through drawing comics, evolving to filmmaking as a way to bring her illustrations to life. She strives for meaningful collaborations, opportunities for creativity and healthy work environments on her projects.
Liu’s directorial work often features surrealism and dreamlike worlds. Her short films have screened at Provincetown International Film Festival, Urbanworld, Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, and Rhode Island International Film Festival. Liu has directed music videos for renowned musical artists like Rakim and her work has been featured on Stereogum and NPR Music. She is a contributing director to the New York Times' Op-Doc Series, a NAACP Image Award Nominee, and an honoree of the DOC NYC 40 Under 40.
Liu is the cinematographer for the Emmy award winning documentary STILL: A MICHAEL J. FOX MOVIE (Sundance 2023) and POWER (Sundance 2024). She is the Director of Photography and Executive Producer of the Netflix original documentary WHITE HOT: THE RISE & FALL OF ABERCROMBIE & FITCH and has lensed several other docs such as the Oscar shortlisted film HOW WE GET FREE. UNFINISHED BUSINESS, WE ARE: THE BROOKLYN SAINTS, TAKE YOUR PILLS, and the Alanis Morissette documentary JAGGED. Her camera work in the commercial world includes clients such as Saucony, Puma, Converse, HBO, Fidelity and a Super Bowl ad for PETA. She has shot 2nd unit cinematography for TV shows like PRESUMED INNOCENT and films such as AMERICAN FICTION. Before becoming a cinematographer, Liu spent years working as a camera assistant on hit shows like PERSON OF INTEREST, WHITE COLLAR and GIRLS.
Liu is a member of the International Cinematographers Guild, the Society of Camera Operators, and a graduate of Brown University. She enjoys analogue photography and developing film in her kitchen in her spare time.
